About Dr. Richard Burke

Dr. Richard Burke has been performing thousands of interventional procedures to relieve pain and increase function while decreasing dependence on narcotic medications and steroid injections.

Dr. Burke earned a BA in Physics from the University of Rochester, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from there as well, with a sub-internship in pathology. He went on to Duke University Medical Center, where he completed his internship in surgery, residency in anesthesia, and fellowship in cardiac anesthesia and pain management.

He is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and is board certified in pain medicine as well, which is co-sponsored by the American Board of Anesthesiology, American Board of Family Medicine, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Burke scored in the top 1% on the anesthesiology recertification exam.

He specializes in the interventional treatment of central and peripheral nervous system disorders which cause chronic neuropathic pain.

As a pioneer in the field, he has been implanting spinal cord stimulators and intra-spinal infusion pumps since 1995. To our knowledge, he remains the only physician North of Grand Rapids who can implant these devices. He has also been implanting peripheral nerve stimulators since 1999 and has been an early adopter of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) stimulation.

Dr. Burke has also received training in minimally invasive outpatient procedures that relieve pressure on the spine (i.e., MILD®—Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression—along with Coflex® and Vertiflex™ procedures, which are less invasive treatment options for spinal stenosis).

Dr. Burke worked at the Munson Medical Pain Clinic in Traverse City from 1994-2022, where he also served as Medical Director.

In his free time, Dr. Burke enjoys spending time with his wife, Kim, his family, his dog pack, and the outdoors. He is an avid tennis player, kiteboarder, skier, and extreme sports adventurer.
